Catholic Charities, Diocese of Paterson operates dozens of programs to help those most in need. During this time, we have remained nearly entirely operational. Programs include help for children of all ages, services for those in recovery, assistance for immigrants, support for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, giving back to Veterans and much more.
While these programs have persevered on, Catholic Charities, Diocese of Paterson's Food Pantries and Emergency Support Programs have seen the largest increase in need and actual services provided.
Food Pantries
In a typical month, Catholic Charities, Diocese of Paterson gives out food to 5,000 - 7,000 people. In April this went up to 11,000 individuals, May 21,000, and in June just under 25,000 children, women and men. This a 5-fold increase!
March - July we have given out nearly 940,000 pounds of food
This equates to approximately $1,600,000 worth of food during this 5 month period!
Emergency Support Programs
Call volume of those in need (people in need of short term rental assistance, utility payment assistance, those who are at risk of becoming homeless, etc) has gone up ten-fold from prior to COVID-19.
Between March and July we have given out over $1,800,000 worth of funds to those most in need with an average distribution of $1,500 per household.
The funds given out have been from donations and grants, and funds through the CARES Act and similar contracts with counties and cities.
The Emergency assistance that we have provided is a 60% increase from a typical, pre-Covid month
