✙ Feb ruary 3 – Saint Agatha: Died ca. 250A.D. Patron Saint of breast cancer patients and nurses
Saint Agatha faced much suffering in her life. Having dedicated her virginity to God, fifteen-year-old Agatha, from a rich and noble family, rejected the amorous advances of the Roman prefect Quintianus, who then persecuted her for her Christian faith. Angered by her refusal of his amorous interest he sent Agatha to a brothel. However, her willful nature keep her refusing the demands of the Madame of the brothel returns her to Quintianus. He argues, threatens, and finally has her put in prison. Amongst the tortures she underwent was the cutting off of her breasts. After further dramatic confrontations with Quintianus, Saint Agatha was then sentenced to be burnt at the stake but an earthquake saved her from that fate; instead, she was sent to prison where St. Peter the Apostle appeared to her and healed her wounds. Saint Agatha died in prison.
World Cancer Day
World Cancer Day is an international day marked on February 4 to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment. World Cancer Day was founded by the Union for International Cancer Control to support the goals of the World Cancer Declaration, written in 2008. Please pray for those suffering with cancer and loved ones who have died because of it.
February 5 – Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year 2019 will be a year of the Pig, part of an ancient tradition in which the Chinese zodiac attaches animal signs to each lunar year in a cycle of 12 years. Often, the evening preceding Chinese New Year's Day is an occasion for Chinese families to gather for the annual reunion dinner. It is also traditional for every family to thoroughly cleanse the house, in order to sweep away any ill-fortune and to make way for good incoming luck. Windows and doors will be decorated with red color paper-cuts and couplets with popular themes of "good fortune" or "happiness", "wealth", and "longevity". Other activities include lighting firecrackers and giving money in red paper envelopes.
