God of the prophets, God of Christ: we are reminded today that your blessings do not necessarily follow the logic of the world. We pray for a more just world. Help us to stand in solidarity with the oppressed and marginalized; show us your presence in the faces of those the world forgets. In a society divided so many labels we alone have created, remind us that we are created in your image, each of us a beautiful reflection of you, each of us your beloved child.
AMEN

January 21 – Martin Luther King Day
We remember the gentle, patient courage of Dr. King, as he made the teachings of Jesus the literal rule for loving: refusing the temptation to render an eye for an eye or a tooth for a tooth but rendering instead good for evil; nonviolently offering the other cheek to those who, blinded by hate, taunted and loving those who chose to be his enemies and persecutors; following his Lord in showing the greatest love of all by laying down his life for others. Lord, give us the courage to live by what we say we believe and to accept the teachings of Christ as codes of conduct rather than mere words of inspiration.
January 22 – Day of Prayer for Protection of the Unborn
The over 56 million abortions since the 1973 decisions of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton reflect with heartbreaking magnitude what Pope Francis means by a “throwaway culture.” The annual Right to Life March in Washington D.C. will be held on this day drawing hundreds and thousands of peaceful protesters seeking to raise awareness of this issue and its impact on the mother as well as the unborn child.
Rachel's Vineyard weekends for healing after abortion are in our diocese. Married couples, mothers, fathers, grandparents and siblings of aborted children, as well as persons who have been involved in the abortion industry have come to Rachel's Vineyard in search of peace and inner healing. The weekend is a lot of work but yields a fruitful harvest for all who are willing to labor there. To learn more please contact: Project Rachel: (973) 777-8818 ext. 269. All calls are confidential.
✙January 24 –Saint Francis de Sales - Patron Saint of Authors, Journalists, Writers
Francis, the eldest of 13 children, was born into a family of nobility in France in 1567. His father wanted him to marry, but Francis desired to be a priest. His father consented, and Francis was ordained to the priesthood in 1593. Besides his two well-known books, the “Introduction to the Devout Life” and “A Treatise on the Love of God”, he wrote many pamphlets and carried on a vast correspondence. For his writings, he has been named patron of the Catholic Press. His writings, filled with his characteristic gentle spirit, are addressed to lay people. He wants to make them understand that they too are called to be saints. In spite of his busy and comparatively short life, he had time to collaborate with another saint, Jane Frances de Chantal, in the work of establishing the Sisters of the Visitation.
