Gruenert Center is DPD’s Adult Day Training program located in Lake Hopatcong, NJ. The Gruenert Center offers a diversified experience to approximately 50 clients through paid work opportunities in its sub-contract work area, prime manufacturing of ceramics and community cleaning crews. The program also offers relevant learning experiences through its many specialty groups such as communication, current events, relaxation and stress management and performing arts.
The program runs from 8:30 - 3:30 Monday through Friday.
Volunteers are utilized in all aspects of the program at a time convenient for them. Some volunteer once a week or more, some a few hours a day, others come twice a month.
There is much flexibility for volunteer work.
Gruenert Center clients had the opportunity to take part in a workshop of body, breath and decision making which was designed and presented by occupational therapy students from Kean University. This event was the brainchild of Emily Thomas, a “People Need Friends” volunteer and OT student.
Emily approached the DPD with an interest in volunteering her skills but not sure as to how to go about it. After visiting the Gruenert Center she was inspired to go back to her Occupational Therapy program at Kean and present the idea that there could be a liaison with the school and the Gruenert Center.
t was Emily’s vision that brought her back again along with five of her colleagues to meet the clients and staff to discuss possibilities for a workshop. With their input the students carefully designed the workshop taking into account the individualized needs and interests of the people at Gruenert Center. They returned a few weeks later and ran their workshop with rave reviews from clients and staff alike. Kenny, a client at the Gruenert Center was very disappointed that he was home sick that day and continues to ask “when are they coming again?” The DPD is most appreciative of all their hard work and is also looking forward to them “coming again” just like Kenny.
