On March 6th seniors from Catholic Charities, Senior Activities Program, went to the YMCA in Paterson for swim lessons.
Mildred is 78 years old and does not know how to swim. "I signed up for swim lessons and I will learn how to swim by the end of the session she said proudly. I will practice putting my face under water at home so I will get better doing that."
Our Senior Activities Program is a FREE Program that serves over 300 seniors, 62 years old or older that reside in Paterson. The Senior Activities Program provides the seniors the opportunity for physical, social and intellectual development while creating new bonds for social support.
It was inspiring to see the determination on the faces of these adults. Carmen (who uses a cane for walking) said "that she will conquer this challenge of learning to swim, it is the best form of exercise. Maybe I can then get rid of this cane that I do not like"
Swimming and water aerobic activities have been shown to improve heart health, aide join pain, increase flexibility, and boost mental health in seniors.
We appreciate the YMCA and the low cost programs they offer for seniors and people in need, however the low rate is still difficult for most of our seniors to afford. You can help by sponsoring a senior to attend a class or two. Your support would make a world of difference. Visit ccpaterson.org/give to make a contribution and show your support for seniors in need.
Catholic Charities is proud to support seniors in need.
