It is back to school season for children throughout the Diocese of Paterson. For many, this time of year brings excitement, some nervousness, and new beginnings.
However, many young people throughout our surrounding communities, have great concerns and needs. Catholic Charities, Diocese of Paterson makes a difference in the lives of thousands of people each day. Many of these individuals are children and many of these children's family members do not have the means to afford backpacks or school supplies. Thankfully, Catholic Charities, kind donors and giving community groups are there to answer the call for help.
One such group is Connect for Community, based out of Sparta, NJ. Connect for Community started at the height of the recession in November 2009 with many food pantries in need of help. Founder and CEO Suzanne Stigers first came up with the name Coupons for the Community and began donating hygiene supplies to those need. Through the years, this organization has grown to help thousands and supports food pantries, soup kitchens, and children in need.
On Sunday, August 26th, Mrs. Stigers and over 25 volunteers visited Catholic Charities' Father English Center to hand out backpacks to children and families from throughout Paterson. These backpacks are filled with needed supplies including a personal hygiene kit, filler papers, pencils, pens, markers, scissors highlighters, pencil cases and more. Over 600 backpacks were filled for and handed out to children and their families.
"Many children we serve are truly in need. For some, starting the new school year comes with some embarrassment, as their families are unable to afford book bags or school stationery. Without these backpacks, students would start the school year without the supplies they need. This day was more than just a gift drive, together with Catholic Charities Case workers and volunteers, we helped connect people to needed services. Today's event led my Connect for Community and Mrs. Stigers is truly a concerted effort to make a difference in the lives of many," said Sister Maureen Sullivan Director of Volunteers and Pastoral Care for Catholic Family and Community Services.
"I was born in Paterson and this city is very near and dear to me. Catholic Charities Food Pantries serve over 3,500 families a month; this reach is truly special. We are proud to give back to such an unbelievable cause," said Mrs. Stigers.
In addition, to the backpacks and school supplies, each family was given lunch, needed hygiene items and farm-fresh produce.
"Catholic Charities right here in the Diocese of Paterson truly does it all and helps so very many people in need. We would not be able to serve this great number of people without the help of community groups and volunteers like Connect For Community and Suzanne Stigers. On behalfs of all of those who work and are served at Catholic Charities, we would like to thank all of those who were involved in this powerful endeavor," said Scott Milliken, Catholic Charities CEO
