Throughout the last several months, the individuals who live at the Department for Persons with Disabilities (DPD) have been sheltering in place to follow state guidelines and stay safe from COVID-19.
Group home visits from DPD family members and volunteers had been put on hold through this time, and community outings had also been suspended.
Like many individuals throughout the tri-state area, some areas of self-care had also been paused throughout the pandemic, including haircuts.
With this in mind, DPD Gruenert Center volunteer and stylist, Cathy Ritz jumped into action. She arranged to come out to DPD's Wiegand Farm campus, in Oak Ridge, to give haircuts, shampoos and stylings for all of the individuals who live at DPD!
Cathy was joined by Pasquale and Lorenzo from Lorenzo Pasquale Full Service Salon, Rockaway.
They cut hair out in the open air of the Lou Tatti Pavilion to keep everyone safe and practice social distancing.
"This was an amazing act of kindness and charity and all the individuals who live at DPD felt so special and refreshed after their haircuts. They were smiling ear to ear. We are truly blessed to have kind support from our volunteers, and the entire community who have been there for us during this challenging time," said Joanna Miller, Executive Director of DPD.
DPD operates 10 group homes, 2 supervised apartments and many additional services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities throughout Sussex, Morris and Passaic County.
