In June, DPD's Fight for the Right Community Service Group met and helped make a difference in the lives of many.
Inspirational greeting cards, handmade by members of the group; "blessing bags", and clothing donations were given to representatives from SSVF (Support Services for Veteran Families) of our Catholic Charities, Diocese of Paterson.
Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) Program, provides supportive services to Veterans with very low income who are literally homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Veteran families are provided a range of supportive services designed to promote housing stability.
Blessing Bags included needed hygiene items that will make a world of difference for a Veteran who has been lifted from homelessness.
The Fight for the Right group is the Department for Persons with Disabilities community service group. The name was created by an individual from DPD who is a member of the group and implies fighting for what is right and providing service to those in our local communities, nation and worldwide who are in need.
The group is overseen by dedicated volunteers Jenn Minervino and Anna Philhower.
The group meets monthly to decide upon and perform worthwhile community service projects. Projects have included donating Mother's Day gifts to a pregnant women's shelter, planting flowers at a nursing home, giving back to our veterans, supporting law enforcement, running product drives for pet adoption and animal reserves, donating food to food banks, handcrafting, filling and donating Christmas stockings to a social service agency, participating in the Houston Holocaust Museum’s butterfly holocaust memorial wall project and doing yard work and clean up at a community park for an annual Community Clean-up Day, among other projects. Group members give input regarding project ideas and which ones are ultimately chosen.
"It feels good to give back to our Veterans who have sacrificed so much," said Kaleigh from Wehrlen House.
We are proud of our Fight for the Right Group Members and Volunteers and are blessed to support Veterans in Need!
