+++ ----+++----+++----+++----+++----+++----+++----+++-- ✙ May 21 – Feast Day of Saint Constantine: 272 A.D. – 337 A.D. Constantine—as the first Christian emperor—is a significant figure in the history of Christianity. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, built on his orders at the purported site of Jesus' tomb in Jerusalem, became the holiest place in Christendom. When his father, Constantius, had died he’d been proclaimed emperor. The problem was that one of his generals, General Maxentius, had other ideas. He thought he should be emperor, and now that the matter was going to be settled by a battle close to a bridge that crossed the River Tiber near Rome. The night before the battle, Constantine had a dream. Jesus appeared to him in the dream and said that he must make the cross his own symbol and have it placed on all the imperial flags and standards. The next morning, October 28 in the year 312, the battle began. As in the army of General Maxentius began to advance across the bridge; it collapsed, flinging many of his soldiers into the river. Constantine won easily.
✙ May 24 -St. Rita of Cascia: Patron Saint of the Impossible Saint Rita is the patroness of impossible causes and hopeless circumstances because of her difficult and disappointing life. From an early age St. Rita desired to become a nun, but her parents insisted that she marry at the age of twelve. St. Rita did so in obedience to them. Adding to her disappointment, the man her parents arranged for her to marry was cruel and harsh, and she spent 18 years in a very difficult marriage and had 2 sons. Her husband eventually became physically abusive. He was murdered as a result of political rivalries. Both of her sons fell sick and died within a year of his death. St. Rita was all alone in the world and sought again to enter the convent, as had been her desire from childhood. She was turned away because of her family's association with the civil strife. Rita prayed continuously and eventually her prayers were answered and she was accepted into the convent. Even though her life was full of sorrows and disappointments, Rita was consoled by closely uniting herself with the sufferings of Christ.
