✙ January 28- St. Thomas Aquinas,
Priest and doctor of the Church - 1225 – March 7, 1274
Patron Saint of universities and students.
Thomas Aquinas was born toward the end of the year 1226. He was nicknamed the "dumb ox" because of his silent ways and huge size, but he was really a brilliant student. He authored many works but most widely known for the “Summa Theologica” called a classic of the history of philosophy and one of the most influential works of Western literature. It is a summary, or manual of theology including the five arguments for the existence of God known as the "five ways”. Although incomplete, it contains approximately three thousand, five hundred pages.
✙ January 31 - Saint John Bosco - August 16, 1815 – January 31, 1888.
Patron saint of editors, school children & juvenile delinquents.
John was born in 1815 in Becchi, Italy. His father died when he was only 2. His mother gave him lots of love and taught him to love God and others. In 1841 he was ordained a priest. John, later called “Don” a title of honor, became a "father" to thousands of children. He started a school for poor boys, many of whom he met when he visited their parents in prison as part of his priestly work. These boys lived in the prisons, too, or on the streets. Father Bosco wanted something more for them. So he started a school where they could eat and sleep safely. He taught them about music. They also learned how to make shoes and clothes and books. When these boys grew up, they could get jobs. John also taught the boys about God’s love for them. Later, John began a similar school for poor girls. Because so many boys and girls needed love and care, John needed others to help him. Hence the Salesian order was founded with helping boys as its mission and the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians—an order of nuns to help girls. Don Bosco left a legacy. His ideals, his spirit, his constant activity are all still with us in his Salesian priests, brothers, and sisters, who strive to perpetuate his work on earth.
